Joshua’s Great Battle — A Preview of War With the Antichrist

Joshua praying for the sun to "stand still"

In my first piece on “Types and Shadows”, we examined the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar in the book of Daniel and how so much in his career was a foreshadow of the actions of the end-times Antichrist. As we continue in this series, I wanted focus on the book of Joshua, a book that is not often thought of as end-times prophecy, but is. In fact, although this article will focus on one chapter, the case can be made that the entire book of Joshua is a preview of the book of Revelation.

Types and Shadows

Now this article is based on the idea of “types and shadows” in the Bible. This is essentially the Bible’s way of foreshadowing future prophetic events through Old Testament Scripture. Here are some passages that highlight this:

Ecclesiastes 1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Colossians 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Hosea 12:10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines a ‘similitude’ as: 1. Likeness; resemblance; likeness in nature, qualities of appearance; as similitude of substance.

The Lord has used much of the historic events of the Old Testament to provide a preview of future events. Whether it be the Passover of Exodus foreshadowing the crucifixion of Christ on the cross and His shed blood which provides the remission of sins or the 12 tribes of Israel and the twelve disciples, there are many similitudes throughout the Bible. What will happen in the future has happened already in some form or fashion. This is also the case for prophecies of things to come. Thus when reading the Bible any future prophetic event should have a type or shadow in a prior part of Scripture.

Joshua’s Great Battle

Joshua was a mighty military leader and great servant to The Lord. As he led the Israelites into the Promised Land, he wages numerous military campaigns. There is one battle in Chapter 10 of Joshua that raises lots of prophetic, end-time red flags: the battle against Adonizdec.

Joshua 10:1 Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them; 2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty. 3 Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem, sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. 5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

From the earliest chapter of the Bible Jerusalem was a Holy City of The Lord (see Genesis 14, when Melchizedek, the King of Salem – or Jerusalem, encounters Abraham). But by the times of Joshua, the city had been turned over to paganism. The nations in the Promised Land at the time of the book of Joshua were usurpers, working in Satan’s grand scheme to keep the Israelites out of the Promised Land and destroy the lineage that would lead to the Promised Messiah, Jesus Christ.

The Names

Adoni-zedec in Hebrew means “King of Righteousness” or “King of Justice.” He was an Amorite-Canaanite King at a time when that culture was deeply into the worship of the gods Baal and Ashtoreth, with pagan sacrifices being conducted in the high places of Jerusalem.1 There is great irony then in his name as “King of Righteousness.” But the prophetic value of this cannot be missed. As the end-times Antichrist, will also enter into power “peaceably” (Daniel 11) and present himself as a substitute for true Lord of Righteousness, Jesus Christ. Reading Revelation 13, which describes much of the Antichrist’s or Beast’s reign, it is apparent that the people of the world are amazed by the Antichrist inasmuch as they eventually agree to worship him. So he too will be a false “Righteous King.”

On the side of The Lord, we see even more prophetic confirmation in Joshua. The name Joshua or Yeshua in Hebrew, means “salvation.” In fact Joshua is the Hebrew form of the name “Jesus” and of course in the end times it will be Jesus who defeats the Antichrist (Revelation 19). So as we see another link to end times prophecy, the type and shadow of this chapter becomes more clear.

Jerusalem

Adonizedec operates out of Jerusalem. In the end-times, the Antichrist will also operate out of the Holy City:

1 Thessalonians 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

The Apostle Paul prophesied that the Antichrist or “son of perdition” will sit in the temple of God, proclaiming that he is God and exalting himself over The Lord. The temple of God at that time was and can only be in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah. There is no temple there today (as it was destroyed in 70 AD by the Roman Empire) but this verse has led many to believe a future temple will be built. Just as Joshua defeated the pagan usurper to reclaim the Holy City for the Lord, so too will Jesus Christ return to Earth and defeat the false Messiah Antichrist and reclaim the entire world for God.

A Plan of Destruction

Adonizedec’s hostility towards God’s people is obvious. Once he heard of the victories of Joshua and how the Gibeonites made peace with him, Adonizedec wanted to wage war with them just for extending peaceful relations the God’s chosen nation. It seems the “Roadmap to peace” with Israel was just as treacherous then as it is today, with nations still unwilling to achieve peace with Israel. And thus Adonizedec sought to destroy them. So too will the Antichrist seek to persecute and kill the saints of God in the end-times (Revelation 13:7).

The pagan King then forms a confederation with ten kings to go wage war against the Israelites by attacking one of their allies. In the end times, the Bible informs that the Antichrist will also form a confederation with 10 Kings:

Revelation 17:12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. 13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

We know from Revelation 13, that the Antichrist’s government will be global. He will have control over all nation of the world. However, prior to being the sole global dictator, he will share his power. The final world government shall be comprised of ten regional rulers who will be in power for “one hour” with the beast. The angel sent to explain the visions the Apostle John views in chapter 17 identifies the horn on the beast as these rulers. Daniel chapter 7 also identifies the 10-horned beast with an 11th horn rising from them that would become the Beast of Revelation. After the set time of “one hour”, the ten regional rulers will then conspire to transfer all of their power and authority to the Beast giving him complete global control. And the end goal of this confederation is the same as it was in the times of Joshua: to wage war and conquer God’s people.

10 Region Government Today?

For many people who have researched global government or the One World Order, they have come across articles or illustrations referencing a map that was created by the Club of Rome, which in its own words is a ” …a global think tank and centre of innovation and initiative.” The map envisions a world divided into 10 regions:

Although this may not be the final map used in a global government. It is this author’s belief that it will be something similar. Some prophecy scholars advocate that the Antichrist’s Kingdom will be a “revived Roman Empire” comprised mostly of present-day Europe and the Mediterranean. However, this does not jive with the descriptions of the Antichrist’s authority in Revelation which is global. And with the European Union formed, African Union coming to fruition and similar, regional confederacies springing up, this prophecy is becoming more and more of a reality.

Signs in the Sky

In this incredible battle that took place between the Israelites and the confederacy of Adonizedec, there are some very powerful and unique prophetic markers that again show a type and shadow to the book of Revelation and the end-time period to come. The enemies of Israel were first hit with hailstones from the sky:

11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

In Revelation, one of the judgments we read is very similar: Revelation 16:21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

Joshua’s battle was also famous for being the day the “sun stood still”: 12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

Now some may question how the sun can “Stand still” if the Earth rotates around it. But we must remember language of the ancient times and perspective. The sun could be described as moving even if it is the Earth that is moving but from the perspective of an ancient writer, if the Earth did not rotate for a day it would appear that sun “stood still.” Even today, we use terms like “sunrise” and “sunset” as a reflection of how the sun appears from our perspective. In Revelation, at the time the Biblical “Day of The Lord” starts, when God Almighty Himself will rise to pour out His punishment on the sinful world, we see similar unprecedented signs:
Revelation 6:2 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood

In both instances, the sun and the moon have unprecedented actions that would surely signify God’s Hand at work. Interestingly, in Revelation, these signs are accompanied by a devastating global earthquake that sends all the rich and powerful people of the world into hiding in holes and caves.

15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

In Joshua, the signs of God gets a similar reaction:
16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah. 17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

Joshua eventually defeats Adonizedec and all of the usurper Kings and in like manner Jesus will defeat the Antichrist with the brightness of His Coming (Revelation 19).

The other key component of this battle is that God Himself fights for Israel. The book of Joshua further describes it as a day like no other. This is later referenced in Zechariah 14: ” 1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. 2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle”. [emphasis added]

This passage which is prophesying about the final end time battle of Armageddon, again links the Joshua Chapter 10 battle to the end times. That battle with Adonizedec was the day when God fought and once again in the Day of The Lord (during the end times tribulation), God will once again rise up to fight on behalf of Israel.

As we see in this overlap of the signs in these battles we can conclude that Joshua was indeed a type of Jesus Christ and his war to lead God’s nation into the Promised Land was a shadow of Jesus Christ’s future defeat of the Antichrist and reclaiming the Earth for the saints of The Lord. These remarkable patterns that The Lord has put in the Bible help inform us when we are trying to interpret prophetic Scripture. Any future event should have a prior type in Scripture and we should study the Word diligently to find out to confirm what we may think to be true. And all of this will help us to keep our eyes open to world events as the Word of God becomes more and more of a reality.

It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings [is] to search out a matter. — Proverbs 25:2.

Nebuchadnezzar 666 — Foreshadow of The Antichrist

In End-Times/Eschatology on September 3, 2010 at 12:05 am

Worship God, Not an Image

There are many, many people I have encountered in Biblical discussions or forums who charge that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon was an evil, pagan king and there was no love for The Lord our God in him. On the contrary, Nebuchadnezzar was in fact a believer who converted from pagan religions. This King, one of the first global rulers in ancient times (in the sense that he conquered the known world), had a very fascinating career in the way that God used him and taught him while the prophet Daniel was in his courts. And through his life, some of his actions were previews of the reign of the Antichrist of the end times.

The Golden Statue – 666

In Daniel Chapter 2, the prophet Daniel is summoned to the Babylonian King’s court to help interpret a dream. He first had to tell the King what the dream was (because the King could not recall it — he only had the disturbing the dream left with him) and then interpret the meaning of it. After much prayer, God blessed Daniel to know the dream and its meaning. The Babylonian King had seen a statue with a head of gold, torso of silver, midsection of bronze, legs of iron and feet of iron and clay. Each different metal represented the four Kingdoms that would dominate the Earth in the coming centuries starting with the Babylonian Kingdom. In fact, Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar that he is that head of gold:

Daniel 2:37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. 38And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.

Again, we see that Nebuchadnezzar was a global ruler. He had been given power and raised up by God to rule the entire known world. Nebuchadnezzar. After hearing this interpretation, the King promoted Daniel to be his chief advisor and complimented The Lord (but had not yet professed his faith). Filled with pride, the King then decided he was going to build a statue of pure gold, of himself. And here is where we see a type or shadow of the Antichrist to come:

Daniel 3:1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

So here Nebuchadnezzar has set up a golden statue of himself that 60 cubits tall and 6 cubits wide. This is an extreme act of pride that is normally reserved for someone who thinks of themselves as a god. This is later confirmed as the passage continues:

2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. 3 Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4 Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages, 5 That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: 6 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.

The Scriptures make it clear that the King was declaring himself to be a god and demanding worship. But the worship was to be directed at the statue he had erected. And even the numbers involve are clues: A statue 60 cubits tall, 6 cubits wide and was to be worshiped when 6 instruments are played. And we know from the book of Revelation that 666 is the number of the Antichrist. This is the Hebrew parallel poetic style the Bible was written in. The Lord expresses Himself through repeated events, occurrences and ideas. Here, the Bible is giving a foreshadow to the religious system of the Antichrist. The Book of Revelation prophesies that the Beast, or the Antichrist, will be a global ruler. He will have power over all people and his religious system will be based on the worship of him.

Revelation 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. 7And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Like Nebuchadnezzar, the Antichrist will proclaim himself to be god. He will be worshiped by all of the people on the Earth who do not have Jesus Christ as their Savior. There are no exceptions in his system once it is established. And it is enforced and directed by his cohort, The False Prophet. The False Prophet will emerge on the public scene at the same time as the Antichrist and be a Spiritual leader who promotes the Antichrist as “The One”, the messiah the world has been waiting for. And with his words and false miracles he will encourage the world to set up an “image” of the Antichrist:

14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. (Revelation 13)

So again, we see the parallel. The image of the beast, whether it be a statue or hologram, or whatever it may be, is where all worship is to be directed, under penalty of death. Just like the golden statue. This is the similitude that the book of Hosea is speaking of. It is a repeated idea or theme from ancient times to future prophecy. They are all throughout the Bible.

The Kings Becomes a Beast

After seeing Daniel’s friends, Shadrach, Meshach and Abendego, survive the furnace for not worshiping his statue, King Nebuchadnezzar was once again moved to praise God and of course promoted these 3 young men to prominent positions in his kingdom as he had done previously. But he still had not truly humbled himself before God. He believed the God of Daniel existed, and saw his works, but had not made him lord of his life. This lesson would not be learned until we get to the account of chapter 4, where the King has another disturbing dream which Daniel interprets. And in the dream, the King, symbolized by a tree, has his kingdom removed from him and suffers a punishment for his excessive pride:

Daniel 4:15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: 16Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.

The King’s heart was going to be replaced with a beast’s. A transformation was going to undertake him that would literally make this wealthy, powerful King act like an animal. This chapter is rich with foreshadowing. For one we see the global King being compared and transformed to a beast. And of course in Revelation, the Antichrist is constantly referred to as “the Beast.” We also see that the length of the punishment of Nebuchadnezzar is “seven times” which is interpreted as seven years. This is the length of the final end-time period of the Earth known as Daniel’s 70th week. The 70th week is the time when the Beast or Antichrist, makes his ascent to global power and rulership. And we know that Satan will be supernaturally empowering the antichrist to perform miracles, wonders and secure his unrivaled power. Just as Nebuchadnezzar was changed, so will the beast be.

The Book of Proverbs tells us “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” Searching the Scriptures not only builds our relationship with The Lord and strengthens our faith, it is fun. And Bible prophecy is an area that can be very exciting when studied. But like anything we do in life, we must do it in accordance with what God says and commands. The Lord has set patterns in His Word for us to recognize and understand. The past can truly show us the future in the Bible. And most importantly, it can help us gain more appreciation for how great and awesome God is, as He has declared the future of the world from thousands of years ago. And thus we should worship Him, serve Him and live for Him to show our belief and love for Him. The Antichrist will be defeated by the mere appearance of Jesus Christ on Earth (Revelation 19) and suffer eternal punishment in the lake of fire. But Nebuchadnezzar, after spending his seven years roaming the grounds of his kingdom like an animal, was humbled and did what we should all do when facing the God of the universe: repent.

” 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: 35And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? 36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.” (Daniel 4).

1 Explanation of “times” being interpreted as “years”

What Does The Bible say about The New World Order?

In End -Time Deception, End-Times/Eschatology on August 11, 2010 at 7:16 pm

In the Christian and secular world (and definitely on the internet), there is much discussion about a One World Order or “New World Order.” There are no doubt thousands of sites, sermons and youtube videos that discuss a One World government, New World Order or some variation on that theme. This blog will take a completely Biblical look to show what the Bible has to say on the topic. In fact it will seek to show that the Bible has predicted a Coming One World Order from almost 2,000 years ago and that this future order will be the second such attempt by man (and will fail once again).

One World Government
There are many details of this coming  One World Order throughout the Bible but the most detailed description can be found in the book of the Revelation Chapter 13. Revelation, the final book of the Bible, was written between 65-86 A.D. and is a description of the last years of the Earth leading up to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Revelation 13 is the primary chapter where see a description of society under the rule of The Beast, also known as The Antichrist. Here we read:

Revelation 13: 1And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. 2And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. 3And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

The vivid description of the antichrist is symbolic of his power structure. The animal parts and horns are all indicative of the government in which he will rule. We can know this because we get a description of what the vision John the Revelator has means in Revelation Chapter 17:
7And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 8The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 9And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. 10And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. 11And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. 12And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. 13These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

For the purposes of this article we are going to focus on verse 12. The ten horns on the beast are “ten kings.” This is a term for rulers, those who are in executive political office. This is an aspect of Revelation that is not discussed enough. The Bible prophesies that in the end times, the world is going to be ruled in ten kingdoms or regions. They are represented in this image as 10 horns on the beast. In the end times, these ten leaders are going to be the final global rulers (in a presumably regional government). They will rule with the antichrist for “one hour.” This is metaphorical language as the “hour” could be days, months or years. But after this hour, the ten world rulers will then conspire and be in agreement to turn over all their power to the Antichrist. We know this is the case because in verse 13 the Bible informs us that these ten kings have “one mind” and that they “give” their power to the Beast. At this point the Antichrist has global control.

As the angel continues to interpret the vision for John, we learn that the power the Antichrist wields is “given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations” (emphasis added). This is describing all the races, languages and countries of the entire Earth. All under the leadership of one ruler. This is global government.

Going back to Chapter 13 of Revelation, we see further confirmation of the absolute control and dominance of the Antichrist:
Revelation 13:4And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

The people’s exclamations show that the Beast is a unique figure on the planet. No one is like him. In addition, no one is able to fight him in war. This is significant because it again shows that his military power and dominance are unparalleled. After a time of ruling with the final 10 leaders, the Antichrist will have absolute rule over all people on the planet. And the world will be in awe of him.

One World Religion

In addition to having political and military control of the world, the Antichrist will also establish a unified, global religious system. At this point it is good to remember that Satan is the source of the antichrist’s power (2 Thessalonians 2:9). And Satan’s ultimate goal is to be God. His desire since his initial rebellion has been to imitate and replace The Lord our God . In the book of Isaiah, chapter 14, the 5-point plan of the Devil is described in detail:
13For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north*: 14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

So the devil wants to literally be on a throne exalted above all beings and to be worshiped. Even the location of where he wants this worship is listed as “the sides of the north.” This is a real location on Earth, which the Bible identifies. Psalm chapter 48 states: 1Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. 2Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

“Mount Zion” is a biblical term for Jerusalem, Israel. This is literally where Satan wants to operate from. And in his efforts to mimic The Lord, he will empower the Antichrist to be a false imitation of The True Messiah, Jesus Christ Our Lord.  The antichrist will be Satan’s way of making a false copy of his own “son” and messiah. Jesus came to Earth as a means to reconcile man to God. The antichrist will try to deceive the world into a false religious system centered on him and Satan. The antichrist’s actions once in power make this clear. The Bible describes his goal:

4Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. (2 Thessalonians Chapter 2)

Going back to Revelation 13, we are introduced to the cohort of the Antichrist, The False Prophet. He is the “second beast” John sees a vision of in this chapter. The False prophet is responsible for setting up the religious system of the Antichrist. We read:

11And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

The False Prophet (he is given this title in Chapter 19 of Revelation) is pictured as having “horns like a lamb.” His appearance will be that of a peaceful religious leader. But his words will be directed by Satan. He will also be able to win the world over to his views by miracles and wonders. This is particularly fitting as we enter an age when the attacks on Christianity are at an all-time high. The world is growing more skeptical of the faith while finding the lure of the occult and the New Age very inviting. This makes society ripe for miracles. And when genuine supernatural acts are being performed, millions and millions will be clamoring for “The One”, the false “Messiah” who can solve all of our ills in the world. And the False Prophet will be directing everyone to worship the antichrist.

The Satanic agenda behind it is revealed when we see that the False Prophet’s real tool is just deception. He deceives the world, save for those who know the Bible truth and believe in Jesus Christ. And again, we see that miracles and signs are the means by which the world will be seduced to this satanic plan. Then the antichrist will initiate this with a bold move of blasphemy:

3Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. — 2 Thessalonians 2

After a time of winning the people over with his charm and wonders, the antichrist will proclaim himself to be God and every citizen of the world will be required to worship him. His true agenda will be revealed. It is the author’s belief that this will occur 3 ½ years into the political career of the antichrist. To facilitate this worship, we read that the False Prophet will also set up an image of the Antichrist. Whether this is a statue or a hologram of some sort, it’s impossible to discern from the text. But some image of the antichrist will actually be given “life.” It will be artificial intelligence. So much so that it will be able to speak and demand worship. And this is where the focus of the world’s worship will be directed. And those who do not comply, will be killed. This again, is a global religious system. There are no exceptions. The entire world will be subject to this religion.

One World Economy

This is perhaps one of the most-well known aspects of Bible Prophecy. Many people are familiar with the Mark of The Beast. But not as many know that its purpose is purely economical. Revelation 13 informs us:

16And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

A mark will be instituted for every single person in society. The passage is clear that everyone in every social class will be receiving it. And it’s for commerce. Nothing can be bought or sold without this mark in either one’s right hand or forehead. The amazing thing to consider is that this prophecy was written almost 2,000 years ago. At a time when almost any item one possessed could be used to buy something else. Barter was a very common system and the Roman empire had already instituted a coin currency. Gold and silver could also be used for purchases. There were many ways to buy and sell in the First century. Yet the Apostle John wrote about a system that all came down to a mark that controlled all commerce. Now this Mark would have to clearly be sophisticated enough to determine how much wealth an individual had or else there would be no way to distinguish over whether you could buy something expensive or cheap. Clearly a system like this could never be implemented until the last 20 years with the invention of computer technology and specifically wireless communications. With electronic debit, wifi shopping and microchip technology, today, it is very conceivable that we can move to a cashless society, in which all purchases and sales could be tracked. An IBM commercial from several years ago illustrates the exact point.

Where it All Started

So why is this all happening? Why would Satan want to set up a Global One World Order? What is the point? We know from Isaiah 14 discussed above that Satan ultimately wants to be God and thus mimic The Lord in every way possible. And there is something in the world being unified that can lead us down a path to follow Satan even quicker than people do today. The first time such a thing was attempted was at the Tower of Babel.

Genesis 11: 1And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. 4And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 6And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. 8So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 9Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Under the leadership of the emperor and occultist, Nimrod, the Tower of Babel was the first attempt at a one-world order. Everyone spoke the same language, lived in the same area and were attempting to make one society and build a tower that could “reach unto heaven.” Now the meaning of this phrase is debated among Bible scholars but there is no debate that this is something that God was strongly against. It was an act of rebellion born out of pride and the desire to “make a name” for oneself and God thwarted this effort by confusing the languages and scattering the people all over the world. Since then Satan has been biding his time to once again create a society where “the people is one.” And we can see that the world is moving right along with his plans.

Here we have on the left, an early painting of the Tower of Babel and on the right, a poster for the European Union. There can be no mistake here. The message is that the EU is a step towards rebuilding the Tower of Babel. The motto: “Many tongues, one voice” also speaks of a globalized society. And for good measure we can see that the 11 stars above the EU tower, are all turned upside down, which is common in the occult.

For another illustration we have the actual EU headquarters:

So even the actual building itself is attempting to be a modern-day Babel. And of course the European Union is one of the major steps towards ushering global government. With an African Union already formed, a South American trade Union in development and rumblings of a North American Union, could the ten regional governments that precede the final government of the Antichrist be far away?

Conclusion

The Bible can be relied upon for many reasons, but one of the chief ones is its prophecy. The prophecies surround Jesus Christ, the Messiah, were all fulfilled in His Birth, life, death and resurrection. The many prophecies concerning the nation of Israel, its diaspora and the eventual permanent return to their land have also come to pass. And these are just some of the prophetic events covered in Scripture. But the exciting part is that there are certain prophecies which have yet to be fulfilled. A one-world society is clearly one of them. And in this age we are living in, the signs of that exact society developing around us are everywhere. So as we see a “New World Order” approaching, what do we do? If we are concerned, instead of fighting it or grabbing or planning a resistance movement, we need to first understand that this is spiritual. Satan wants a One World Order and to deceive the world into making that happen. The antichrist is not going to come into power by force. He is going to be wanted, marveled at and beloved. This is the great deception. And the one counter to it is having Jesus Christ as your Savior. Because although there will be an Antichrist and a False Prophet and a One World Order, they are all defeated by Jesus Christ. In the end everyone takes a stand for Jesus or Satan. Do not be deceived. Having knowledge is not enough. Resisting is not enough. If the time comes that a Mark or implant of some sort is being required under penalty of death, just having foreknowledge will not save you. But having Jesus Christ as your Savior will. The Bible is dead on with this prediction. No other faith even attempts such a detailed description of a One world political, religious and economic system. God gave us these prophecies to know He is real and His word is true. But most importantly so that we can be forgiven for our sins through Jesus Christ and not suffer the fate of those who are deceived by Satan and his false Messiah. The time for repentance is now.

The Nephilim – Giants in the Bible

In End-Times/Eschatology, Nephilim/Aliens on March 28, 2010 at 11:19 pm

David slaying the giant Goliath -- "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that.."

Numbers 13:31But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. 32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. 33And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

When Moses sent his spies to scout the Promised Land so the children of Israel could enter it, the spies reported seeing beings there who were giants. The Bible makes it abundantly clear that there were races of people at that time who were so large, that regular sized men appeared as “grasshoppers” before them (other references can be found in Deuteronomy 2:10-11, 2:21, and 3:11 or the story of David and Goliath for starters). And we see that when the great servant of the Lord, Joshua, was sent to conquer the Promised Land that God commands him to kill all of the men, women and children of these giant races. They were to be wiped as if any remnant of their kind would post a great danger.

So what is this all about? The Bible of course has the answers. Since the day Satan was removed from his position serving God and cast out of godly service as the first sinner and a traitor (Ezekiel 28), he has been conspiring to try and thwart God’s plan of creation and redemption for humanity. And part of his conspiracy is what caused the flood in Genesis. This conspiracy is going to play out all the way to the End of Ages and as we know will end with our King and Savior Jesus Christ being triumphant over Satan and his armies.

The Days of Noah

So let’s start with Matthew 24:26. In Matthew 24 Jesus discusses the temple in Jerusalem being destroyed while it was still under construction. This prophecy of course came true in 70 AD when Titus destroyed the temple and Israel as a nation. Everything else in Matthew 24 is discussing the period known as The Tribulation. We know this from Matthew 24:3 which states: And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

So clearly we see these are questions regarding the end times. And in Matthew 24:36 The Word says: But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Jesus explains that the times on Earth will be like the days of Noah before the flood. So now we should look to those times to see what made them unique. In Genesis chapter 6 the Bible states: 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose… 4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Now many people have debated whether the “sons of God” refers to angels or men. And this is precisely why we have to examine the Bible as a complete book and not just hang ideas on one verse. First of all, the Hebrew words for the “sons of God” is B’nai Ha Elohim, which would means these are Heavenly beings, giving credence to them being fallen angels. And then we see the children of these sons of God and daughters of men were “mighty men” and of “renown.” They were also “giants.” Something in their genetics made them super-sized people. And it was their fallen angelic parentage.

But again, we must keep searching the Bible to make certain of meaning. The Bible is self-confirming and one passage of Scripture can always be confirmed by another. We see the term “sons of God” next used in the book of Job. Job 2:1 states: Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

The Hebrew term here once again is B’nai Ha Elohim. And as we know these sons of God here are clearly Angelic beings who are presenting themselves before The Lord (in Heaven). And Satan is among them (who of course is a fallen cherubim – a type of Heavenly being). So there should be no mistaking what the Hebrew term now means. The implication here is that fallen angels married human women and produced children with them. And this act was so abhorrent to The Lord that He punished them. First with the flood and then with imprisonment.

In Jude 1:6 the Bible states: And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 1:8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.

Here we see a reference to angels who left their “habitation” and are reserved in chains until Judgment Day. So which angels could these be? Clearly we should all agree that this is not a reference to Satan. Satan is not in hell. He is roaming the Earth seeking to destroy and deceive as many people as possible (see Job 2 again where the devil says he was walking “to and fro” on the Earth). The Devil and most of his fallen angels are on Earth doing spiritual warfare and will not be sent to Hell until their time of Judgment (Revelations 20). The fallen angels being referenced in Jude are the same angels who had relations with “the daughters of men” (human women). We see the immediate reference to Sodom and Gomorrha afterwards indicating sexual sin (in addition to other lascivious behaviors, the men of Sodom were sexually attracted to the male angels staying with Lot). And as for the “habitation” the angels left, it is the spiritual realm. Many scholars say this habitation refers to the fallen angels leaving Heaven, but again that would not explain why they would already be in hell under chains until Judgment Day since the fallen angels are not in Hell yet.

Looking at 1 Peter 3:19 we see more confirmation: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

So again we see there are spirits who are “in prison” meaning they are already in bondage of Hell. Hell or Sheol at this time, was the holding place for the unsaved who died and Jesus went there to make a triumph over them (Colossians 2:15). And plus, verse 20 makes it clear that the disobedience of these spirits took place at the time of Noah, right before the flood! So again, it all comes back to this time and the specific activity that caused some of the fallen angels to be put in prison before Judgment.

The book of 2 Peter gives even further confirmation: 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; The angels who are already in Hell are again linked to Noah. Plus there is a reference to the sexual sin of Sodom and Gomorrah.

So the question at this point is: why were fallen angels doing this? And why was this such a serious offense that the offending angels were put in Hell immediately? The answer lies in Genesis 3:15.

3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; he shall break thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

This amazing, beautiful verse is the first promise of a redeemer, our Messiah Jesus Christ. The Lord is telling Satan that the seed of a woman will eventually crush him. Now we know all over the Bible the lines of genealogy are described through men. The same for a seed (i.e., the seed of Abraham). But the one seed spoken of from a woman is Jesus Christ (“Behold a virgin shall conceive a son and His Name shall be Emmanuel..”). The only way we could be saved was through a virgin birth with The Lord providing the baby to a virgin woman. Jesus being both 100% man and 100% God allowed him to take all sins of humanity and save us all. So Satan, seeking to stop this plan thought of a way to corrupt it: by having fallen angels taking women and having children with them! By doing this he could ruin the lineage of the coming Messiah by making him part fallen angel. And to no surprise, the people who were becoming increasingly mixed with fallen angels were becoming increasingly evil.

The corruption was so bad the Lord states: Genesis 6:5And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
The Lord shows regret for even making any living creatures.

But Noah found Grace in the Eyes of God.

In addition to being a faithful servant to The Lord Genesis 6:9 tells us that Noah was “perfect in his generations.” As opposed to referring to his moral perfection (and Noah of course being a man, was not perfect) this phrase meant was that Noah’s lineage was 100% human. Noah did not have any Nephilim in his family line so he was able to carry on the lineage that would lead to Jesus Christ. And we see Genesis 11 goes to great detail to list the lineage going from Noah to Abraham so there is a record.

Of course Satan continued to conspire against The Lord from that point and continues today. The repeated temptation of the Israelites to worship him (in the form of other gods like Baal and Molech), tempting Christ in the wilderness and then going into Judas to provoke the conspiracy to have Christ killed. All these things fulfilled The Lord’s plan because He all along knows what is going to take place and moves all things, good and evil towards His Ultimate just and righteous Purpose. So in the end times will the Nephilim return? It’s possible. Many speculate the alien phenomena could be a “disguise” for this. But the main point for the Christian is to not be deceived by any of this.  Instead, let us rejoice in knowing that no matter what the adversary attempts the ultimate victory lies with Jesus Christ our Risen Savior.

Killed for Christ – The Second War in Iraq

In End-Times/Eschatology, Persecuted Church on February 19, 2010 at 8:21 pm

    Biblical Principles

Matthew 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

Matthew 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Psalm 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

News of the fourth murder of a Christian in Iraq this week has still not garnered barely any mainstream media attention. Whether one supported the war in Iraq or not, our troops are there and deserve our support and prayers. But we must not also forget the rampant Christian persecution that has been taking place since the war started. In Iraq and many other countries around the world, there is an open war against Christians. This is spiritual at its core. The forces of darkness don’t want the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to spread across this world. Whether it’s church bombings, denial of basic rights, being jailed, beaten or killed, the persecution against the followers of Jesus Christ is growing to an all-time high. For men like Basil Mati Koriya Kaktoma, life as a follower of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ became a nightmare. As he stated: “What I saw was so horrible that I can’t even look at a map of my own country.” 1

Kaktoma, a retired oil company employee, was abducted by Muslim gunmen in May 2006. During the eight days of his captivity, he was physically abused, including the breaking of his right leg which has become permanently discolored. He was released because relatives in the United States and Canada paid the ransom. And all of this was just for being a Christian. Christians, who make up just 3% of the Iraqi population, have comprised 50% of the refugees leaving the country. An estimated 250,000 – 500,000 Christians have fled the country since the war commenced.

The end-time persecution of our brothers and sisters in the faith was prophesied by Jesus. Living in America. The 5th Seal of Revelation Chapter 6 shows us the souls of martyrs who “were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:” (Revelation 6:10). When they cry out for vengeance to God, He assures that they should wait “until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled” (Revelation 6:11). Persecution was not only prophesied, it’s going to be the final straw that brings God into action to judge those who have persecuted His saints.

Living in the United States it’s difficult to perceive at times how widespread the brutal attacks, harassment and killing of Christians is worldwide. We have no one trying to stop us from worshiping and many still have a hard time getting up on Sunday to do what others are being killed for. Stay on top of these issues. There are some great websites like persecution.com which provide updates and prayer requests for persecuted saints who are overseas. Learn their stories. Share their testimonies and support ministries that seek to spread the Gospel to the nations. We must continue to pray for Christians overseas who live in countries that permit persecution. In all of this sad news, the church is still growing exponentially! Nations like China are seeing tens of thousands of new Christians each month. Underground churches are spreading throughout the Middle East and Asia. Christ is indeed building His church!

Pray for these nations. Pray for the leaders of these nations to provide equal protection under the law for Christians. Pray for the people who are doing these attacks, that they can find Jesus and be forgiven for their sins. And pray for the faith of the Christians who are being victimized. That they can stand strong in the face of persecution. Pray that they respond in a Christ-like manner, blessing those who cruse them and praying for those who persecute them. And pray that they always remember Christ’s promise to all believers:

In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

The Return of the Antichrist

In Bible Study, End-Times/Eschatology, Prophecy on January 8, 2010 at 2:03 am

Revelation 17:10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

I will be doing a series of in-depth studies on the book of the Revelation throughout the early part of this year. And in these times we’re living in, one of the hottest topics in end-times prophecy is the Antichrist. This figure who will present himself as a false substitute of the True Christ, our Lord Jesus, and deceive the world into political and religious unification with him as the head (Revelation 13) and seek to establish a satanically empowered empire. But having read the whole book of Revelation, we know the antichrist’s time will be short-lived as Jesus Christ, the Messiah will come and destroy the Antichrist, his partner the False Prophet and all their forces with the brightness of His Coming and establish a Kingdom of Righteousness. Amen. This has left many believers and the curious wondering…just who is the Antichrist?

While many theories abound as to who the Antichrist is (with ideas running from Obama, the Pope, Tony Blair..etc.), most of these ideas if not all of them fall apart under Biblical scrutiny (and I certainly don’t believe any of those men are). I wanted to kick off this series by sharing a very important and often overlooked passage regarding his identity. Living in what certainly feels like the end-times, there is a natural urge in the Christian to speculate on the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. And this is a good thing. Jesus Christ our Lord instructed us to “watch” and “be ready”! (Matthew 24:44-46) So we should be looking eagerly to His arrival when He comes in the clouds for His saints. But in our speculation we always have to rely on what the Scriptures say to inform our beliefs. And this passage in Revelation 17 is very telling.

The beauty of the book of Revelation is that for all of the startling imagery that often leaves readers very confused, the angels who accompany John The Revelator as he is being shown things which he “hast seen, and the things which are, and things which shall be hereafter”, take the time to explain the visions he witnesses and interpret them for him. This makes understanding Revelation much easier and we should take their explanations to heart as believers. In chapter 17 John has just seen an image of a woman riding a scarlet colored beast (this beast had been previously described in Revelation chapter 13 as The Beast or the Antichrist). Here is the description we see in chapter 17:

1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

So here we see the vivid description of Mystery Babylon the Great, who is drunk “with the blood of the martyrs” (a key to identifying mystery Babylon). But we are going to focus on the beast that she is riding. And the angel provides the explanation of who (or what) this beast is:

7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. >

The angel clearly tells John that he is going explain “the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her.” So we do not need to go into speculation — the answer is here! In verse 8 the antichrist, referred to as “the beast” is first described as one that “was, and is not, and yet is.” This verse is very important as it makes a stark contrast to the description that Jesus Christ our Lord gives of Himself in Revelation Chapter 1:

8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty
.

The phrase “which is, and which was, and which is to come” is a demonstration that Jesus Christ is eternal. He voluntarily lowered Himself (Hebrews 2:) when He came to Earth and was born on this as the seed of a woman prophesied in Genesis 3:15 and all throughout all the Old Testament. And although He laid his life down on the cross, He conquered death and the grave in His Resurrection (Acts 2:24). And in His resurrected body He ascended to Heaven where He sits at the right hand of The Father. Therefore He has always existed.

The Beast, on the other hand, is described as one who “was, and is not, and yet is.” This indicates that he is not eternal. But it gives us a huge clue as to his identity – he has already existed in the past! But he died and did NOT conquer the grave. He is still dead at the time John is receiving the vision. So where is the Beast now? Verse 8 tells us. He is in “the bottomless pit.” So just what does that mean. This calls for examining the text. The Greek word for “bottomless pit” is abussos.
Strong’s concordance explains abussos as follows:

12 abussos {ab’-us-sos}
AV – bottomless pit 5, deep 2, bottomless 2; Total: 9
1) bottomless
2) unbounded
3) the abyss
3a) the pit
3b) the immeasurable depth
3c) of Orcus, a very deep gulf or chasm in the lowest parts of the earth used as the common receptacle of the dead and especially as the abode of demons.

Another term for abussos is “deep.” We see “the deep” referenced in Luke Chapter 8:

26 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.

So here we see the demons called Legion begging Jesus not be to be sent to “the deep.” This is the same term for “bottomless pit.” It is a place of punishment and detainment for demonic spirits or (those who have pledged allegiance to the adversary). This is the current location of the antichrist. The Angel makes this quite clear.

To further confirm that the antichrist is a person who has lived before, the Angel provides more explanation:

9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

“Here is the mind that hath wisdom” is calling us to be wise in understanding what is about to be stated. The Angel explains that the seven heads are “seven mountains.” Symbolically, these mountains represent “seven kings.” Kings are real people. They are rulers. (Many Christians have interpreted these “kings” to mean nations, but it does not say this. It clearly says that they are kings.) And there is a historical sequence of these kings. Five are “fallen” meaning at the time of the writing of Revelation they were dead (most Biblical scholars agree Revelation was written sometime between 65 AD and 90 AD). “One is” means that one at that time was alive. “And the other is yet to come” meant that that the seventh king was coming some time after the writing of Revelation.
But the Beast is described as “the eighth, and is of the seven.” Again it is confirmed that the Antichrist has lived before! And that he is returning. He is one of those seven historic, “Mystery Kings” and he is going to return and go “into perdition.” This should significantly help us narrow down the field on who the Antichrist could be. There are only seven candidates and 6 of them lived at least 1,900 years ago. So who could these “Mystery Kings” possibly be? Stay tuned for the next part of the series.
